After working with the clarinets at Horton High School back in January (with the Sackville Community Band), both bands performed that evening, individually and en masse. The strong Horton music program is certainly benefitting from the direction of fellow SCB member Maggie Helm. The SCB season culminates with two performances - May 17 as part of the 4C's sponsored Music for Life program, and May 24 with a free concert for the community of Sackville and visiting guests from PEI school bands, at A.J. Smeltzer Junior High School.
The Baroque N' Fiddle String Quartet broadened its reach, and performed with the Kings Chorale and director Bill Perrot for a series of Titanic memorial concerts in April which featured the Canadian composition Titanic Requiem, by Donald Patriquin. The BNFSQ is also recording this month, with Scott Ferguson at Studio FMP, with the album to be released in late June!
The Wyndrock Quintet also wrapped up their season at the Helen Creighton Room (Alderney Gate Library) with a Spring Concert featuring two new world premieres! Bach's Goldberg Variations, and Copland's Shaker Varitions, from Apalachian Spring were both adapted for wind quintet (plus piano) by Wyndrock French hornist and arranger Michael Chisholm.

The Sackville Community Band also put on a nice open air concert in Peggy's Cove, NS that was well attended and well received!
Now it's time to start looking forward to the fall, with a September performance at the Highland Village in Iona, Cape Breton to celebrate the release of the Gaelic film "Ruidhle an Fhidhleir/The Fiddler's Reel", by director Marc Almon. During production of this film, I was called on to provide music for the soundtrack, but while on set they even threw me in as an extra!

Music for Life! The Sackville Community Band, along with members of the Sackville High School Band and its feeder junior high and elementary bands, will be featured in a special Music for Life Gala Community Concert at Sackville High School on Thursday, May 26th at 7:00 pm. Admission is by freewill donation and everyone is welcome to attend.
This performance marks the culmination of a 4-month project sponsored by the 4Cs Foundation, which provides grants for community arts projects that inspire, empower, and connect children and their communities.
The Community Band has acted as musical mentors to the students and since February the adult and student musicians have come together for rehearsals, workshops and social settings. Clinicians from the Sackville Band and 100 students from Sackville High School, A.J. Smeltzer, Cavalier Drive and Leslie Thomas Junior High Schools gathered for an entire day of workshops in March. The concert will include the premier performance of “Sackville Peaks”, which was commissioned and composed especially for this project by well-known Nova Scotian composer and conductor Scott MacMillan.
This will be an exciting performance, a wonderful opportunity to support arts education in our public schools and a marvellous showcase of “Music for Life” in Sackville.
Please join us on Thursday, May 26th.
